Rethinking Operational Excellence: Why Process Trumps People (For Now)

People, Process, Technology

One debate in operational excellence often mirrors the chicken-and-egg conundrum: Which comes first – people, process, or technology? Traditional wisdom suggests starting with people – after all, they’re the ones who execute the processes and use the technology. However, I have seen many companies with highly competent people and the right technology that failed to meet their goals because of inefficient processes. The answer to the question lies not in choosing which comes first but in understanding how these three pillars interlock to create sustainable growth.

The Process Foundation

The foundation of operational excellence begins with the understanding that processes provide the skeleton upon which people and technology build muscle. Even exceptional teams falter without clear, well-designed processes to guide their efforts. To excel, organizations should start with process thinking. This means:

  1. Identifying critical processes that directly add value to products or services
  2. Creating linear workflows that minimize interdependencies
  3. Defining clear handover points between steps
  4. Building reproducible outcomes into every operation
  5. Establishing clear metrics for success at each stage
  6. Creating frameworks for continuous improvement

The Right People at the Right Time

Process thinking does not diminish the importance of people – quite the opposite. Organizations require different types of people at different stages to build and execute efficient processes! These include:

  • Process Architects to design the initial framework, high-level process maps, and establish core workflows
  • Skilled Operators to execute and refine processes over time
  • Innovative Leaders to drive continuous improvement and adaptation

The process architects are like master chefs who create a restaurant’s menu and signature dishes, while the skilled operators are like kitchen staff who consistently reproduce the dishes to perfection!

Technology as the Amplifier

Finally, technology enters this equation not as a savior but as an enabler. Once the organization’s processes are clearly defined and its people are properly aligned, technology then amplifies their effectiveness. It’s akin to adding power steering to a well-designed car – it makes operation smoother but cannot compensate for fundamental design flaws. Technology should:

  • Automate repetitive tasks within established processes
  • Augment human capabilities in complex decision-making
  • Scale operations without proportional cost increase
  • Provide data for continuous improvement

The path to operational excellence is about orchestrating the interaction of processes, people, and technology in the right sequence – starting with process architecture, bringing in the right people at the right stages, and leveraging technology to scale what works. This foundation creates not just efficiency but sustainable, repeatable success.
